When the clay tiles are cracked or spalled, after a chimney fire, when the flue is unlined, or whenever you change the appliance, a new gas or high-efficiency insert almost always needs a correctly sized liner because the old flue is far too large for its exhaust volume.

Rigid liner is used where the flue runs straight and access allows it, and it resists creosote buildup slightly better. Flexible liner is used for offset or bent flues, which covers most older New Jersey chimneys. Both are stainless; the choice is dictated by the chimney, not by price.

In most cases yes. Insulating the liner keeps flue gases hot enough to vent properly, reduces condensation and creosote formation, and is required by many manufacturers for the warranty and for zero-clearance ratings on interior chases.
