Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A cap prevents water infiltration (the #1 cause of masonry damage), keeps out squirrels, raccoons, and birds, and stops downdrafts.
Stainless steel is the default for New Jersey homes and typically carries a lifetime warranty. Copper costs more but ages to a patina many owners prefer on historic houses. Galvanized caps are cheapest and usually rust through within a few seasons, so we don't install them.
Not when it's sized correctly. The cap's net free area has to exceed the flue's cross-section, and multi-flue caps need adequate height above the tiles. An undersized or too-low cap restricts flow, which is a common cause of smoke spillage after a cheap install.
A single-flue cap is typically a 30 to 45 minute job once we're on the roof and have the flue measurements. Custom multi-flue and full-crown covers are fabricated to your dimensions, so those come back for a second visit after measuring.
