Wood vs. Gas Fireplace: Which Is Right for Your Home?
By Chimney Cleaners Editorial · December 11, 2025 · 5 min read
Wood is warmer and cheaper to fuel. Gas is easier and cleaner. Here's the honest side-by-side.
Both types deliver heat and ambiance, but the ownership experience is very different.
Wood-burning
Pros: Radiant heat, real fire, no gas bill. Cons: Annual sweeping, wood storage, creosote risk.
Gas-burning
Pros: Instant on, no ash, no creosote. Cons: Higher install cost, less BTU, still needs annual inspection.
Our take
If you already have a working masonry fireplace, keep burning wood and sweep annually. If you're building new, gas is easier long-term.
