The NJ Uniform Construction Code adopts NFPA 211 for chimneys. Here's what you need to know before a sweep, repair, or install.
New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23) adopts the International Residential Code and NFPA 211 for chimneys and vents. Any repair or replacement above cosmetic patching requires a permit through your municipal construction office.
Common code touchpoints
- Liner sizing must match appliance BTU output
- Minimum 2-inch clearance from combustibles for masonry chimneys
- Chimney must extend at least 3 feet above roof penetration and 2 feet above anything within 10 feet
- Rain caps required on all masonry chimneys
- Level 2 inspection required when appliance is changed
Working with a licensed contractor who pulls the permit is the only way to protect your homeowner's insurance in the event of a claim.
